StanfordUniversitywasfoundedbythethenGovernorofCaliforniaandMember’srailwaytycoonLelandStanfordandhiswifeJaneLathropStanfordjointlyestablishedin1891.TheuniversityisbasedontheirsonLelandStanfordJr.whodiedoftyphoidontheeveoftheirsixtiethbirthday(1884).Inthenameandtocommemorate,LelandStanfordoncetoldhiswife:"AllthechildreninCaliforniawillbeourchildren."

In1824,theoldStanfordwasborninawealthyfarmer’sfamily.,ServedasgovernorofCaliforniain1861;in1863heandhiswifeJennyestablishedtheCentralPacificRailwayCompany,andStanfordservedaspresident.

In1876,theoldStanfordpurchased263hectaresoflandinCaliforniaasahorseranch,whichwaslaterexpandedto3237hectaresandbecamethesiteoftheStanfordUniversitycampus;intheStanfordUniversitylogoandsportslogoThereistheimageofsequoia.

In1884,hisbelovedson,Stanford,diedoftyphoidfeverwhiletravelingwithhisparentsinEurope.AfterthegrievingStanfordcouplereturnedtotheUnitedStates,theydecidedtosharehissavingsof20millionU.S.dollarswithhiminPa3561hectaresoflandinPaloAltowasusedtocreateauniversity.

OnOctober1,1891,StanfordUniversityhelditsopeningceremony.Atthattime,newspapersinNewYorkpredictedthatnoonewouldgotothewestofthewildlandtoattendthisuniversity:"Professorswillbeinthemarbleclassroom.Lecturesontheemptybench,"Butonthedayoftheopeningoftheuniversity,therewasanunexpectedbusyschedule.Therewere559maleandfemalestudentsinthefirstsession,two-thirdsofwhomwerefromoutsideCalifornia.

In1893,theoldStanforddiedinhissleep.Misfortunesnevercamealone,andhispropertywasfrozen.Undersuchdifficultcircumstances,Mrs.Stanforddidnotintendtoclosetheschool.Shedidherbesttokeeptheschoolrunninguntilthefundingfreezewascompletelyliftedsixyearslater.Mrs.Stanfordsoldherrailroadstockandtransferred$11milliontotheuniversity'sboardofdirectors.ThecrisisatStanfordUniversityfinallypassed.PresidentJordansaid:"Thelifeanddeathofthisuniversityareallbasedontheloveofakindlady."

TheRisePeriod

Inthe1960s,whenitwasthesamepublicinstitutionintheSanFranciscoBayArea.WhiletheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyiswell-knowninacademicactivitiesandstudentsports,StanfordUniversityisstillunknown.Becausethefarmusedtotrainexcellentbreedsofhorseracingwasusedasthecampusoftheschool,andtheremotewestwasstilldesolateandclosedintheeyesoftheAmericans,peoplealsocalledStanfordUniversity"FarmUniversity"atthattime.

OnNovember6,1948,physicsprofessorFelixBlochbecamethefirstNobelPrizewinneratStanfordUniversity.

In1951,FrederickTerman,DeanoftheSchoolofEngineeringatStanfordUniversity,decidedtoestablishanindustrialparkonthecampus,rentingthecampuslandtothehigh-techcompaniesatthetime.Itisconsideredtobesuchamoment.ThisdecisionnotonlylaidthefoundationofSiliconValley,butalsocompletelychangedthestructureofStanfordUniversity.Forthisreason,hehimselfwashonoredasthe"FatherofSiliconValley."
