Old Tang Book

Introductiontothework

TheTangDynastyhasbeencompiledinalldynasties.SincethebeginningoftheTangDynasty,hehaswrittenthehistoryofthecountryonthebasisofactualrecords.ThemostfamousonesarewrittenbyWuJingandWeiShu.WuJingwrotesixty-fivevolumesofthe"BookoftheTang"(onesaidninety-eightvolumes),andWeiShuaddedacontinuationoftheeleventhvolumeofthehistoryofthecountry.Sincethen,LiuFangandothershavesequels.However,WuZong’srecordswereincomplete,andtherecordsofsubsequentdynastieswerenotcompleted,andhistoricaleventswerelacking.BoththeLaterLiangandLaterTangdynastiesorderedtheextensivecollectionofTanghistorymaterials.

InthelaterJinDynasty,JiaWeicompiledthesixty-fivevolumesof"SupplementaryRecordsofTangDynasty"basedonthecollectedposthumousarticlesandoldlegends.InthesixthyearofTianfu,theemperorofthelateJinDynasty(941AD),ShiJingtangorderedthehistoryoftheTangDynastytobeedited,supervisedbythethenprimeministerZhaoYing.Heselectedscribesanddrewupacompleteandhugeplanforcollectinginformationandwritingwork.ThewritingwasbasedonthehistoryoftheTangDynastyandsupplementedwiththelateTanghistoricalmaterialscollectedatthattime.ZhaoYingorganizedthecompilationfromtwoaspects.

First,basedonthemissinghistoricalmaterialsintheHistoryMuseum,pleaseordertopurchasethefirstyearofWuzongHuichangoftheTangDynastytothefirstyearofTianyouofTangZhaozong,"wrotebiographiesandthehistoryofYintai,thecalendaroftheHistoryMuseum,andthebookofedicts.Books,etc.,arenotlimitedtothenumberofyearsandmonths,andmaybeadmitted.Iftherearemoreyearsandmonths,therecordsaredetailed,pleasebriefandunrestricted."

Secondly,togetherwithZhangZhaoyuan,heformulatedacompletehistoryrevisionplanandputforwardanumberofspecificmeasures:SiTiantaifromthefirstyearofEmperorGaozu’sWudetothefirstyearofZhaozong’sTianyou,""Surveythechronologyoftheemperors";thetwoclassesofcivilandmilitaryaffairsandtheprincesandprefectures,eachnarratesacopyoftheofficialmarriage,nametaboo,profession,andmeritoriousservice.The"Records"and"Regulations"oftherelevantmaterialsoftheritualcourtyard,TaichangTemple,DaliTemple,Sitiantai,Yushitai,MinistryofDefense,SecretaryofStateandotherdepartmentsareusedtodescriberituals,music,criminallaw,astronomy,andlaw.History,FiveElements,Officials,Prefectures,Jingji,etc.Twoyearslater,ZhaoYingtookupthepostofJinchangArmyJiedu.However,thecompilationworkcontinuedasplannedunderthespecificauspicesofZhangZhaoyuan.Therefore,thehistorysaidthatZhaoYing"supervisedthehistoryofthecountry,andtheTangDynastystorywasincomplete,andthosewhowereabletoactwereincharge.Whenthetwohundredvolumesofhistoricalrecordsandrevisionswerecompiled,Yingwasthefirsttobepowerful."InthesecondyearofEmperorKaiyun(945AD),theentirebookwascompleted,whichlastedonlymorethanfouryears.

"OldTangBook"waseditedbyShiJingtanginthefifthyearofTianfuintheLaterJinDynasty(940),andwascompletedinthesecondyearofKaiyunintheLaterJinDynasty(945).BecauseLiuZhuwasinpowerwhenthebookwaswritten,andaccordingtotheregulationsatthetime,thegeneralprimeministerhadtobetheeditor-in-chief(supervise)ofthenationalhistory,soLiuZhubecameasignedwriter.Inadditiontothethreesupervisors,atotalof9peopleparticipatedinthepre-editingwork.Theyare:ZhangZhaoyuan,JiaWei,ZhaoXi,WangShen,LuQi,YinZhuo,CuiChao,ZhengYiyi,andLiWeixian(YiZuoguang).Amongthem,ZhangZhaoyuanhasalwaysbeenspecificallyresponsibleforhisaffairs,andisthemostdiligent.JiaWeilefthispostatthefuneralsoonafterreceivingtheedict,andresumedayearbeforethecompletionofthebook.Themaincontributionisthatthe65volumesofhis"SupplementtotheTangDynasty"providedmanyrarehistoricalmaterialsafterWuzongoftheTangDynasty.ZhaoXihasalwaysdonewhathehasdone,and"hasaccomplishedhiswork."WangShenwasonthelistof"EnAward"onthedaythebookwascompleted.LvQipre-studiedthehistoryoftheTangDynasty,andhewasknownas"agoodname"inhistory.

SocialEvaluation

BecauseSongQiandOuyangXiu,theauthorsof"NewBookofTangDynasty",arebothliteraryfigures,anddescendantsgenerallyfollowtheirviews,andhaveaviewof"OldBookofTangDynasty".Therewerealotofderogations,andGuYanwucommentedonitas"quitealotoftrouble"attheendofMingDynasty.Indeed,ithasmanyshortcomings.Butinallfairness,itshouldbesaidthatthe"OldTangBook"hasitsgreatcontributiontothetruthfulpreservationofhistoricalmaterials.Thispointshouldbefullyaffirmed.

Whydoyousaythis?Firstofall,thefirst-handhistoricalmaterialsoftheTangDynastyarepreservedinthe"OldTangBook".Inthe300-yearhistoryoftheTangDynasty,therehavebeenwarsandchaosrepeatedly,andtheoriginalhistoricalmaterialshavegonethroughseveralmajorcatastrophes,especiallytheAnshiRebellionandthemeleeofthewarlordsofthelateTangDynasty,resultingin"XiangShi'slegacy,andtherulerandbambooslipsaregone."Fortunately,therewasthenationalhistorycompiledbyWeiShuduringthetimeofSuzong,andinthelaterJinDynasty,itbecamethemainbasisforcompilingthehistoryoftheTangDynasty.AfterSuzong,therearefewerhistoricalmaterials.EspeciallyinthefivegenerationsofXuan,Yi,Xi,Zhao,andAiafterTangWuzong,eventhe"factualrecord"hasnotbeensaved,becauseZhangZhaoyuanandJiaWeiandotherscollectedvariousrumorsandnovelsinthe"timeofchaos".Thecompilationof"SupplementaryRecordsintheYearoftheTangDynasty"and"HeardandSeeRecordsintheThreeDynastiesoftheLateTangDynasty"madesomesupplementstohistoricalfacts.ItwasonlythirtyyearssincethedeathoftheTangDynastywhenthe"OldTangBook"wascompiled,andmanyhistoricalmaterialsweredirectlyobtainedfromtheTangDynasty."OldTangBook"preservedtheserarehistoricalmaterials.Thisisoneofitsgreatbenefits.Forexample,thesentences"JianShangJianZuo","ShangAscendedtheThrone","ShangChuHeir"andothersentencesincertainbiographiesareobviouslytracesrecordeddirectlyfromthecountry'shistoryandactualrecordsatthattime.Thehistoricalvalueisespeciallyvaluableifitdirectlyrecordstherecordsofthepeopleatthattime.Somebiographiesalsousedthe"characteristics"and"familybiography"writtenbypeopleintheTangDynastyatthattime.ThesefamilybiographiesareoftenwrittenbyfamousauthorsintheTangDynasty.Theynotonlykeephistoricaldatatruthfully,butarealsoverydistinctiveinwriting.ZhaoYi’s"NotesontheTwenty-twoHistory"commentedthatthe"FengChangqingBiography"inthe"OldTangBook"is"YuBosadanddesolate","Thereisstilllifeunderathousandyears";"GuoZiyiBiography"writtenbyPeiBian,"Thebeginningandtheendareneatandtidy,andtherearenowords,soitcanbeseenthattheTanghistoriansareolderthanliterature."

Inthebiographiesofthe"OldTangBook",alargesectionoftheedicts,scripts,andmemorialsoftheemperorsandministersoftheTangDynastywasalsoquoted.Thecollectionof"BookofTangDynasty"wasretained.Preciselybecauseoftheabove-mentionedadvantagesof"OldTangBook",whenSimaGuangetal.revised"ZiZhiTongJian",theSuiandTangdynastiesusedalargenumberofmaterials.Ontheotherhand,theTangDynastyisastrongandprosperousdynastyinourcountry,andthemulti-ethnicunifiedcountryhasdeveloped.

Althoughthe"OldTangBook"hasflaws,italsohasindeliblevalue.Itpreservesawealthofhistoricalmaterialsandrecordsinmoredetail,whichisconvenientforreaderstounderstandtheprocessandspecificconditionsofhistoricalevents,soitisvalued.Forexample,therecordofpoliticalreformmeasuresduringtheTangShunzongWangShuwenGroup'sadministrationismorespecific.AlthoughthecontentofTangMuzong'slaterperiodismiscellaneous,italsorecordedalotofvaluablehistoricalmaterials.Forexample,inthe"YizongBenji"and"XizongBenji",theChongxunUprisingandHuangchaoUprisingwererecordedinmoredetail.ZhaozongandAidiBenjirecordedinmoredetailthesituationoftheseparatismofthevassalandtheeunuch'smonopolyinthelateTangDynasty.Becausethe"OldTangBook"hasdetailedandclearrecords,SimaGuang's"TangJi"partof"ZiZhiTongJian"roughlyadoptsthe"OldTangBook".

Theguidingprincipleforthecompilationof"OldTangBook"isthatthecompilationmustbebasedontheoldchapters,thatis,tobefaithfultotheoriginalmaterialsleftoverfromtheTangDynasty,andthehistoricalfactsarerecordedinaccordancewiththethinkingandunderstandingofthepeopleatthattime.Inthisway,ittrulyreflectstheideologicalunderstandingandthestyleofthetimesindifferentperiodsoftheTangDynasty.Becauseoftheseadvantagesof"OldTangBook",ithasanirreplaceablestatus.Foranotherexample,inthebiographiesofFuYi,DiRenjie,YaoChong,etc.,articlesagainstBuddhismwerepublished,fromwhichwecanexaminethesignificantinfluenceoftheprevalenceofBuddhismintheTangDynastyonpolitics,economy,andsociety,aswellasthestruggleofsecularlandlordsagainstBuddhism..SomeofthesearticlesaretheearliestpreservedoldTangbooks.

Although"XinTangShu"hasmadesomeadditionstohistoricalmaterials,especiallythechronicles,tables,andbiographiesofthelateTangDynasty,"XinTangShu"isintendedtoovercomethecomplicatedrecordsof"OldTangShu".Shortcomings,sothewritingnotesaretooconcise,makingitdifficultforreaderstounderstandthespecificsituation.The"NewTangBook"alsodeletedandrewrittenalargenumberofarticlespreservedinthe"OldTangBook",whichchangedtheoriginalfaceofhistoricaldocuments.Incontrast,the"NewTangBook"cannotreplacethe"OldTangBook"intermsofpreservinghistoricaldata.
