Historyofestablishment

Countingfromtheestablishmentofitspredecessor,theInstituteofOrientalCulturein1929,theInstituteofHumanitieshasahistoryofmorethan50years.TheInstituteofOrientalCulturewasinitiallycalledtheKyotoInstituteofOrientalCultureInstitute.ItwasestablishedonthebasisofBoxerIndemnity,withtheassistanceoftheMinistryofForeignAffairs,forthepurposeofstudyingChinesecultureandcooperatingwithresearchinstitutionsinTokyo.ItcanbeseenthatintheearlydaysoftheShowaera,theso-called"KyotoChinaStudies"centeredontheDepartmentofLiteratureofKyotoUniversityreceivedconsiderableattentionfromtheacademiccirclesatthattime.Longhistory,deepfoundation.Whenthenewbuildingoftheinstitutewascompletedin1930,therewereonlyeightfull-timeresearchers,anditsoonexpandedtoincludeabout30specialresearchers.

AftertheoutbreakoftheSino-JapaneseWar,theKyotoInstituteoftheInstituteofOrientalCulturewasrenamedtheInstituteofOrientalCulturein1938.InAugust1939,itwaschangedtotheInstituteofHumanitiesSciencesattachedtoKyotoUniversity,whosepurposewastoconductcomprehensiveresearchonthehumanitiesofEastAsia.Atthattime,therewerethreeprofessorsandsixassociateprofessors.Infact,therewasonlyoneprofessorandfourassociateprofessorsforalongperiodoftime.Afterthewar,theHumanitiesResearchInstitutetookanewdirection.TheresearchobjectswereexpandedfromlimitedtoAsiatotheentireworld.ItmergedwiththeInstituteofOrientalCultureandtookovertheInstituteofWesternCulture.Itwasrebuiltin1948andbecameaveritablename.HumanitiesResearchInstitute.Afterthewar,theinstitutesetupelevenlectures,dividedintothreedepartments:Japan,theEast,andtheWest,andcarriedoutindividualresearchandjointresearchatthesametime,andbecamealarge-scaleresearchinstitution.Intheearlypost-warperiod,themainresearchresultwasthecontinuationofChineseclassicalstudiesandarchaeologicalinvestigationsoftheoriginalOrientalCultureInstitute.Forthisreason,itisknownasthe"BirthplaceofChineseStudies"inJapan.In1965,the"OrientationLiteratureCenter"wasestablishedasasubsidiaryorganization.Thecenternotonlycompilesvariouscatalogswiththeabundantsinologicalmaterialscollectedbytheinstitute,butalsoprovidesvariousbookstoresearchersathomeandabroad.Thereareeightfull-timestaff.In1975,theinstituterebuilttheoriginalbuildinginDongyiandexpandeditintoabuildingfourtimeslargerthantheoriginalone,makingresearchactivitiesmoreconvenient.

Post-warJapan'sdemilitarization,socialreforms,andthedevelopmentofmasscommunicationhavegreatlyhelpedthedevelopmentofhumanitiesandsocialsciences.TheHumanitiesResearchInstitutealsoregardsthisdevelopmentasitsownresponsibility.Whetheritisjointresearchorindividualresearchofthemembers,thereareoutstandingachievements.Theresultsofjointresearchinclude"StudyofLusuo"(1951)editedbyTakeoKuwabara,"StudyofAmericanDisturbance"(1952)editedbyKiyoshiInoueandToruWatanabe,and"StudyonAmericanDisturbance"(1952)editedbyShigekiKaizuka,"OramentalBoneInscriptionsCollectedbytheInstituteofHumanSciences,KyotoUniversity""(1959-1968)etc.Thepublicationofotherjournals,thecompilationofcatalogsanddatacollections,andtheresultsofpersonalresearcharetoonumeroustolist.

Fortheneedsofjointresearch,theHumanitiesScienceInstituteoftenasksotherresearchinstitutionsforresearchassistance.Usuallytherearetwiceasmanyvisitingresearchersasfull-timeresearchers,andtheyparticipateinresearchmeetings.In1978,anewguestresearchdepartmentwiththethemeof"comparativeculture"wasestablished.CoupledwiththeestablishmentoftheOrientalStudiesDocumentationCenter,thenumberofscholarsvisitingfromhomeandabroadhasbeenincreasing,andsomehaveparticipatedinjointresearchasvisitingprofessors,orhiredprofessors,orforeigntrainees.Therefore,theHumanitiesResearchInstituteisnotonlyinJapan,butalsohasahighevaluationintheworld,andhasbecomeoneoftheworld'sresearchcenters.
