IntheFiveDynasties,"BookofTang"(ie"BookofOldTang")wascompiled,butSongRenzongbelievedthat"BookofOldTang"couldnotberecordedindetail.Slightlymissing,literarytalentisunknown,factsarescattered",theedictwasrebuiltinthefourthyearofQingli(1044AD).InJulyofthefirstyearofHehe(1054AD),Renzongurgedto"fastentherevisionofthe"BookofTang"."SongMinqiu,FanZhen,OuyangXiu,SongQi,LuXiaqing,andMeiYaochenwereinvolvedintheincident.TheTangliteratureandTanghistorybooksonwhichthe"NewTangBook"isbasedwerecarefullyselected,andthegrotesquecontentofZhenweiwasdeleted,andtheoldhistorywascutdown.Seven-tenthsofthisperiod.Ingeneral,SongQiwasresponsibleforwritingthe"Biography"part,andFanZhenandLvXiaqingwereresponsibleforwritingthe"Zhi"and"Table"respectively.Finally,itwascompletedundertheauspicesofOuyangXiu.The10volumesof"Benji"andthe"Preface"of"Zan","Zhi"and"Table",aswellas"Elections"and"Yiweizhi"areallwrittenbyOuyangXiu.Becausethe"Biography"partwaswrittenbySongQi,andOuyangXiuonlypresidedoverthecompilationofthe"Zhi"and"Biao",outofhumility.Atthesametime,OuyangXiubelievedthatSongQiwasapredecessor.Theangleofworkisunified,so"XinTangShu"hasthedrawbacksofcontradictorynotesanddifferentstyles.Therefore,the"NewTangBook"wassignedby"OuyangXiuandSongQi".Itisoneofthetwenty-fourhistory.

"NewTangshu"attachesgreatimportanceto"Zhi",adding"Yiweizhi","ElectionHistory"and"Bingzhi"."Bingzhi"isaccompaniedbyMaZheng.Theoriginal"Astronomy"and"Almanac"arethreetimeslongerthanthe"OldTangBook".Thenew"Zhi"containsthesalarysystemofthecivilandmilitaryofficials,whichistheold"Zhi".without.TherearealsoTuntian,Bianzhen,Helai,etc.,whicharenotavailableintheold"Zhi".The"NewTangBook"alsoresumedtheestablishmentof"tables",andestablished"PrimeMinisterBiao","FangZhenBiao","ClanLineageTable"and"PrimeMinisterGenealogyTable".WangMingsheng,ascholaroftheQingDynasty,saidinthe"SeventeenHistoryDiscuss":"Thenewbookisthebestinthehistory,thelist,thebiographyisthesecond,andthebookisthelast."WangMingshengalsopointedoutthatthe"Xintangshu"hassomeshortcomingsinthehistorylist.Thosewhoplausiblysaythatthereisnoforminhistoryshouldberemedied,andtherearethosewhohavemanifestationsbutespeciallythosewhocannotberemedied...Theeunuchisinthehandsoftheeunuch,notonlydoesthegovernmentdoeverythingbutalsoabolishesthelegislature,itwillcontrolthedivinestrategy.Thelieutenantisalsoawatch".SongQihasaliteraryname,andonceheldpositionssuchasZhizhigaoandHanlinBachelor.Ittookhimmorethantenyearstocompletethe"Biographies",andinthethirdyearofJiayou(1058AD),hehandedinallthemanuscriptsofthebiographies.OuyangXiuwasawell-knownwriterintheNorthernSongDynastyandwasgoodatancientprose.Hewasdemotedtoalocalofficialforparticipatingintheactivitiesof"QingliNewDeal".ItwasonlyinthefirstyearofHehe(AD1054)thathewastransferredtotheimperialcourtasabachelorofHanlin,presidedovertheworkofcompilinghistory.ItwasthefifthyearofJiayou(1060AD)untilhehadwrittendownthe"Benji","Zhi",and"Table".

TheQingDynastyWangMingshengused"SongHistory·SongQiBiography"and"OuyangXiuBiography"asthebasis.HebelievedthatSongQixiu'sbook"inthelateyearsofRenzongTiansheng,MingDao,Jingyou,Baoyuan,Kangding,andQingli"Successful,enterZuoChengyunyunwithbookChengYunyun";"(Ouyang)XiuZhixiu's"BookofTang"wassomethingthathappenedbeforeJiayoutoHereign.IthasbeenmorethantenyearssinceQi'sdraftwascompleted."It'sbeenmorethan20yearssinceQidraftwascompleted."Therefore,"thesecondpublicrevisionbookisnotclearatthesametime."Thisstatementisstillusedbysomescholarssofar,andthekeytoWangMingsheng'smistakehasnotbeendiscovered.Therootcauseisthat"SongQiBiography"mistakenthetimeof"ZhaoQiubluntly"as"JingyouZhong",andthisistheonlyreignin"SongQiBiography".

The"SongQiChuan"articlepointedoutthatSongQiwasorderedtocompilethe"BookofTang"beforethe"requestforbluntness",soWangMingshengmistakenlybelievedthatSongQixiu's"BookofTang"wasfromheaventoQingli,anditwasalmost17yearsbeforeandafter..However,inthe"SongHistory·RenzongJi"period,therewasnosuchthingas"requisitionforbluntness"inthereignofJingyou.OnlyinthefirstyearofHuangyouwas"remonstrationofremonstranceintheimperialcourt".Inthe"SongQiBiography",SongQi"speaksstraightforwardly"followedby"QueenJinWenchengasanobleconcubine",whichisconsistentwiththerecordof"RenzongJisan",andthetimeis"Huangyou"insteadof"Jingyou".Obviously,"SongQiBiography"mistaken"Huangyou"for"Jingyou",andsuddenlymovedthetimeforwardbymorethan10years.WangMingshengmentionedthatSongQi"guardedBozhouandfollowedthemanuscriptwithhisowndraft"."SongQiBiography"madeitveryclearbecausehe"sithissonandswimfromZhangYan'sside."Althoughthereisnocleardateinthebiography,SongQiisattachedtohisbrotherSongXie'sbiography.Theprevious"SongXieBiography"clearlystates:"TheThreeYearsofHuangyou,"QiZiandtheYueStateLadyCaoFamilyVisitedZhangYanfang".SongXuwasimplicatedinthisyear,andSongQicameoutofBozhou.Thisfashionis"takenbythemanuscript"andisstillbeingedited.Howcanitbecompletedinthecelebrationcalendar?WangMingsheng’smistakeswerethathedidnotknowthat"Jingyou"shouldberegardedas"Huangyou";theotherwasthathelearnedthat"QiXiuShufanwassevenyearsoldfromthefirsttothreeyearsofHuangyou'sfirstyeartothreeyears."Fromthenon,IcametoknowBozhou,andallthebookstoreswereabletofollowtheirowninstructions,andittook16yearstocomplete,"butstillinsistedontheconclusionthat"SongOuxiu's"NewTangshu"isnotatthesametime".Thetitleof"SongHistory·SongQiBiography"iswrong,exceptforthecaseof"SongJingWenJi"Volume29and"StraightTalk",thereisacasethatstates"RenzongBenjiHuangyou3rdSpringandMarchZhaoqiubluntly","thisbiographyisJingyou"Inaddition,itseemsthatnooneknowsitsofar,sopleasepayattentiontomycolleagues.

Asfarasthecompilationoftheentire"NewTangBook"isconcerned,itshouldbesaid:17yearsbeforeandafterthenewTangHistory,SongQipresidedoverthecompilationinthefirst10years,andtheEuropeanandSongbuild".ThedraftwasfirstcompletedandsubmittedtoSongRenzongforreview.Afterreadingit,Renzongfoundthatthishistorybookwaswrittenbytwopeople,andthestyleandliterarystylewerenotthesame,soheorderedOuyangXiutodeleteitandmodifyitasawhole.OuyangXiurefusedtomodifyitatthistime.Hesaid:"SongGongisaseniortome,andwhatpeopleseeisdifferent.Howcanyouknowwhatyouwant?"Intheend,heonlyrevieweditonce,andtherewasnothingeasy.

Becausethe"Xintangshu"hasalwaysheldanorthodoxpositionfromtheSong,Yuan,MingtotheearlyQing,mostpeopleonlyread"NewTangshu"insteadof"OldTang"Book",sotheversionof"NewTangBook"sincetheSongDynastyisfarmorethan"OldTangBook",themainversionscirculatingare:

(1)FourtypesofSouthernSongDynastyblockeditions,eachofwhichisabrokenversionofsonnets,TheoldcollectionofBeisongBuilding,nowinthecollectionofJingjiaLibraryinJapan;theremnantversionofthesamefourteenelements,collectedintheBeijingLibrary;124volumesofthesixteenlines,alsointhecollectionoftheBeijingLibrary;JianyangBookstoreWeiZhongimmediatelyThedilapidatedcopy,theoldcollectionofJiayetang.

(2)Yuancarvededition,MingGuozijianrepairedandprintedaccordingtoYuanedition.

(3)TherearethreetypesofMingcarvededitions,namelytheGuozijiancarvededitionduringtheChenghuaperiod(1465~1487),thetwenty-firsthistoricaleditionofBeijingGuozijianduringtheWanliperiod(1573-1620),andthelateMingDynasty.TheSeventeenHistoryofthePavilion.

Disadvantages

"XinTangShu"alsohasobviousshortcomings,themostimportantpointisthatitdespisesthepeasantuprisingthinkingmoreseriously.ThewritermadegreateffortstoattackthepeasantuprisingsinthelateSuiandTangdynasties.The"HuangChaoBiography"wasprecededbytheword"adverseminister";itusedextremelyviciousvocabularyagainstDouJiandeandotherpeasantsoldiersintheendoftheSuiDynasty,suchas"hedgehoghairfighting","moldingteethshakingpoison","evilgasandflames",etc..Itcanbeseenthatthe"NewTangBook"isbetterthanthe"OldTangBook"intermsoforthodoxviews.Althoughthe"NewTangBook"lists"Bingzhi",itisverysparse.Forexample,"NewTangBook·Bingzhi"records:"TheTangDynastyhastheworldformorethantwohundredyears.Soldiers,thesoldiersofthegovernmentwereabandonedandbecamethehorses,andthehorseswerealsoabandoned,andthesoldiersofFangzhenwereprosperous."Hisargumentisunclear,anditisinconsistentwithhistoricalfacts.

"NewTangshu"usesalargenumberofnotesandnovels,andmanymistakeshavebeenmade.Volume4of"ZhizhaiBookRecordsSolvingProblems"criticizes"NewTangshu"for"pickingupprivatenovels,buttheyareallattached.","It'snothingtohelp."WangGuanguo's"Xuelin"Volume5"NeonClothesFeathers"said:"Althoughthe"GuoShiSuSu"isanovelintheTangDynasty,itsrecordsarenottrue.ThosewhoeditthehistoryoftheTangDynastywillalltakeitanddivideitintovariousbiographies.Theyhavenotcheckedwhetheritis.Therefore,thisisalsothecasewithmistakes."

Intermsofwriting,"NewTangshu"isalsoinferiorto"OldTangshu".Forexample,some"Benji"and"Biography"weretoosimple,andevenmadeunreasonablecuts.QingDynastyhistoricalcriticWangMingsheng's"DiscussiononSeventeenHistory"mentionedthatthe"NewTangBook"isalmostlessthansix-seventhsoftheolderbooks.Accordingtosomestatistics,therearenearly300,000charactersinthe"BookofOldTangDynasty:Benji",butonly90,000charactersareleftin"BookoftheNewTangDynasty".Thiskindofover-abbreviatedwritinghasmadethe"XinTangShu"lostmanyimportanthistoricalmaterials.Inaddition,duetothedemandingtextrefinement,SongQi,OuyangXiu,etc.didnothesitatetodeletemanyimportantplots,suchastheveryvividandtragic"FengChangqingBiography"and"GaoXianzhiBiography"in"OldTangBook",tothe"NewTangBook"Thedeletionisdull.

SongQiandOuyangXiu,themainauthorsof"NewBookoftheTangDynasty",arefamouswritersoftheNorthernSongDynasty.SongQiandhisbrotherSongXuwereknownasthe"SecondSongDynasty"atthetime.Songpeople's"DongxuanRecords"saidthatSongQiwas"experiencedandabletolearnandpossesstalents";OuyangXiuwasoneofthe"EightMastersofTangandSongDynasties",proseItsspecialty.Ofcoursetheirworkisdifferent.
