History

TheUniversityofHelsinkiwasfoundedonMarch26,1640andwasoriginallycalledtheRoyalAcademyofTurku.FinlandwaspartoftheKingdomofSwedenatthattime,andTurkuRoyalAcademywasoneoftheimportantacademicinstitutionsoftheSwedishEmpireatthattime.Inordertotrainmorecompetentnationalmanagers,the13-year-oldQueenChristinaofSwedendecidedtoestablishTurkuUniversityinTurkuinwesternFinland(thecapitalofFinlandatthetime)ontheproposaloftheregent.TheinitialestablishmentofthecollegecompletelyadoptedtheEuropeanuniversityeducationsystemandtaughtinLatin.ThestudentsfirststudyintheSchoolofPhilosophy,andthenmajorintheology,lawormedicineaccordingtotheirpersonalinterests.TeachersandstudentsoftengotootheracademicresearchinstitutionsinEuropetovisitandexchangeanddiscussacademicstudies.

FinlandwasaGrandDuchyofTsaristRussiafrom1809to1917.TheuniversityisincorporatedintotheuniversitysystemofTsaristRussia.TsarAlexanderIallocatedfundstoexpandtheuniversity.TheuniversityofficiallymovedtoHelsinkiin1828,andthecapitalofFinlandalsomovedfromTurkutoHelsinki.ThepurposewastotrainvariousprofessionalsforTsaristRussia.Inthe19thcentury,EuropeanandTsaristRussianuniversitiesbegantoleantowardsexperimentalandempiricalscientificresearch,whichpromotedthenewdevelopmentoftheuniversity.

In1917,theRepublicofFinlandformallybecameindependentfromTsaristRussiaandbecameanindependentdemocracy.TheuniversityhasbeengiventhehighestmissionbytheFinnishgovernmenttotrainvariousprofessionalsforFinland.Inthe20thcentury,theresearchcapabilitiesoftheUniversityofHelsinkihavebeencomparabletootherwell-knownuniversitiesinEurope.

Uptonow,theUniversityofHelsinkihas11collegesand20relativelyindependentresearchinstitutes,500professorsand40,000students.TrainingvariousprofessionalsforFinlandandEurope.Atthesametime,theUniversityofHelsinkiisalsoamemberoftheEuropeanResearchUniversityAlliance,anoutstandingrepresentativeofEuropeanhighereducation,andhasextensiveacademicexchangesandcontactswithothercountriesintheworld.TheUniversityofHelsinkiinthe21stcenturyhasbecomemoreinternational,attractingscholarsfromallovertheworld.

OnApril2,2020,NanjingUniversityandotheruniversitiesformallyannouncedtheestablishmentoftheInternationalUniversityClimateAlliance.

Geographicallocation

InthecenterofHelsinki,thecapitalofFinland,knownasthe"DaughteroftheBalticSea",thereisauniversitywithalonghistoryandawell-knownNorthernEurope.ThisistheUniversityofHelsinki.ThemainbuildingoftheUniversityofHelsinki,locatedontheconferencesquareinthecenterofHelsinki,formsabeautifulpicturewiththetoweringgreenroofandwhitewallsofthecathedralandtheoppositegovernmentofficebuilding.Thisfour-storyyellowbuildingwasbuiltinthemainuniversitybuildingin1832andisasymboloftheFinnishHigherEducationCenter.
