Le père de HeikeKamelinOnnes est propriétaire d'une usine de fabrication de carreaux, mais la culture artistique de sa mère était assez bonne, ce qui l'a profondément influencé.

Né à Groningue le 21 septembre 1853. Il s'adonnait aussi à la poésie quand il était jeune.

En 1870, il entre à l'Université de Groningue pour étudier la physique, puis est transféré à l'Université de Heidelberg en Allemagne l'année suivante, où il a l'occasion de consulter le chimiste Robert Wilhelm Bunsen et le physicien Kirchhoff.

Retourné à Groningue en 1873. Obtention d'un doctorat en 1879.

En 1882, il a été professeur de physique expérimentale à l'Université de Leiden et a fondé le centre de recherche cryogénique de renommée mondiale - LeidenLaboratory.

En 1911, Onnisa utilisé de l'hélium liquide pour refroidir l'or et le platine en dessous de 4,3 K et a découvert que la résistance du platine était constante.
