Indatacommunication,aphysicalnetworknodecanbeadatacircuitterminationdevice(DCE),suchasamodem,hub,bridgeorswitch;itcanalsobeaDataterminalequipment(DTE),suchasdigitalmobilephones,printersorhosts(suchasrouters,workstations,orservers).

IfthenetworkinquestionisaLANorWAN,eachLANorWANnode(atleastadatalinklayerdevice)musthaveaMACaddress,generallyeachnetworkcardhasone.Examplesincludecomputers,packetswitches,xDSLmodems(withEthernetinterfaces),andwirelessLANaccesspoints.Notethatthehubconstitutesaphysicalnetworknode,butdoesnotconstituteaLANnetworknode.Thisisbecauseanetworkconnectedbyahubislogicallyabusnetwork.Similarly,arepeaterorPSTNmodem(withaserialinterface)isaphysicalnetworknoderatherthanaLANnode.

IfthenetworkinquestionistheInternetoranIntranet,manyphysicalnetworknodesarehosts(thatis,InternetnodesidentifiedbyIPaddresses).Allhostsarephysicalnetworknodes.However,somedatalinklayerdevices,suchasswitches,bridges,andWLANaccesspointsdonothaveIPhostaddresses(exceptforsometimesmanagementpurposes).ThesedevicesarenotconsideredInternetnodesorhosts,buttheyarephysicalnetworknodesandLANnode.
