NanjingUniversityTheschoolwasfoundedin1902,whichwaspreparedbySanjiangNormalSchool.ThemainsourceofNanjingUniversityisCentralUniversity,andthesecondsourceisJinlingUniversity,whichwasmergedwiththemainbodyin1952.JinlingUniversitywasestablishedin1888fromtheHuishuAcademy,andin1952,themainbodyoftheinstitutionwasabolishedandmergedwithNanjingUniversity.

In1905,SanjiangNormalSchoolwasrenamedLiangjiangSuperiorNormalSchool.LiRuiqingservedasthesupervisor(principal)ofLiangjiangNormalSchool.Withtheschoolmottoof"Chewingtherootsanddoinggreatthings",itvigorouslyadvocatedscience,Chinesestudiesandarteducation,andcreatedthefirstartdepartmentincollegesanduniversities,andcultivatedthefirstgenerationofmodernartteachersandarttalentsforChina.BeforeandaftertheRevolutionof1911,thepoliticalsituationwasturbulent,andtheschoolwasonceclosed,butresumedinAugust1914.

August30,1914,JiangsuinspectioncommissionerSouthKoreaJunappointedPresidentJiangQiantoorganizetheNanjingHigherNormalSchool.“TheoriginalLiangjiangNormalSchoolinJiangsuProvincewasdroppedoutduetothearmy’sprosperity.Theoverallsituationhasbeendetermined.Itisurgentthattheprovincialcontinuationlineshouldbeopenedtosaveteachers.”LiangjiangThenormalschoolwasreorganizedandbecameNanjingHigherNormalSchool.

In1915,China'sfirstphysicaleducationwasestablished,markingthebeginningofChina'shigherphysicaleducation.

In1917,NanjingHigherNormalSchoolestablishedabusinessmajor(relocatedtoShanghaiin1921andexpandedtobeNationalSoutheastUniversity,JinanSchoolco-foundedShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,andin1922,itwaschangedtoNationalSoutheastUniversityandShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,whichwasthefirstinChina.Abusinessschool).

InOctober1918,theScienceSocietyofChinawasestablishedinNanjingNormalUniversity.MostofthemainmemberstaughtatNanjingNormalUniversityandDongdaUniversity.Itiscalled"ChinaModernScienceBaseCamp","TheBirthplaceofChina'sNaturalScience".IntheearlydaysofmodernChinesescience,morethanhalfofChinesescientistswhopublishedresearchresultsintopinternationalscientificjournalswerefacultyorgraduatesofNanjingUniversity.

InSeptember1919,JiangQianresignedduetoillness,andGuoBingwen,theactingprincipal,succeededhimastheprincipal.

In1920,8femalestudentswereofficiallyenrolledintheschool,andthe"femaleban"wasfirstopenedinChina’snationalinstitutionsofhigherlearning,leadingthetrendofco-educationalco-education.

OnApril7,1920,GuoBingwenproposedtoreorganizetheNationalUniversityforthefirsttimeattheschoolaffairsmeeting.,TheconstructionofNanjingUniversity,theestablishmentofamacro”,butduetovariousreasons,thisproposalwasnotapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationoftheRepublicofChina.

InSeptember1920,theschoolimplementedanelectivesystemandacreditsystem,offeringcompulsoryandelectivecourses,andstudentscangraduateonlyaftercompletingcertaincredits.Thesereformsaregraduallyadoptedbythenationaleducationcommunity.TheearliestmodernacademicresearchwascarriedoutinChina,andtheearliestmodernscientificresearchlaboratoryinthecountrywasestablished.ItbecametheearliestinChinawithuniversityautonomy,academicfreedom,liberalartsasthebasics,combinedwithspecializedappliedsubjectssuchasagriculture,industryandcommerce,andintegratedteachingandresearch.Modernuniversity.

OnDecember7,1920,theStateCounciloftheBeijingGovernmentapprovedtheestablishmentofauniversitybasedonthespecialtiesoftheSouthernNormalUniversityandnamedittheNationalSoutheastUniversity.OnDecember16,thePreparatoryOfficeofNationalSoutheastUniversitywasformallyestablished.

OnJune6,1921,thePreparatoryOfficeofDongdaheldaboardofdirectorsinShanghai,passedtheuniversityorganizationoutline,preparedabudget,andrecommendedGuoBingwenasthefirstpresident.InJuly,theMinistryofEducationapprovedthe"OrganizationOutlineofSoutheastUniversity",andDongdaenrolledpreparatorystudentsinAugust.InSeptember,NationalSoutheastUniversityofficiallyopened.

TeachingBuilding

InJuly1923,theschoolcardofNanjingHigherNormalSchoolwaswithdrawn,andNangaowasofficiallymergedintoDongda,soitwascalledtheNationalSoutheastUniversity.

InAugust1924,duetofinancialconstraints,Dongdasuspendedtheengineeringdepartment,andtheengineeringdepartmentandtheHohaiEngineeringCollegewerecombinedtoformtheHohaiUniversityofTechnology.

TheFourthNationalSunYat-senUniversity

In1927,theNationalGovernmentwasestablishedandtheEducationAdministrationCommitteeAfteroverallconsideration,theuniversitydistrictsystemwasimplemented.The9publicschoolsofNationalSoutheastUniversity,HohaiUniversityofTechnology,ShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,JiangsuUniversityofLawandPoliticalScience,JiangsuMedicalUniversityandfourpublicspecializedschoolsinJiangsuweremerged,andtheywerereorganizedandrenamedinthecapitalNanjing."TheFourthNationalSunYat-senUniversity",tocommemoratethefourthhistoricalandculturalcityconqueredbyDr.SunYat-senandtheNorthernExpedition.

JiangsuUniversity

AftertheschoolwasrenamedtheFourthSunYat-senUniversity,theeducatorsgenerallybelievedthatSunYat-senUniversityhasmorethanoneplace,whichisdifficulttoidentify.In1928,theNationalGovernmentpromulgatedthe"UniversityDistrictRegulations",requiring"universitiesineachprovincetobebasedonthenamesofthelocalities,"andstipulatingthattheFourthSunYat-senUniversityshouldbechangedtoJiangsuUniversity.Therefore,itwasrenamed"JiangsuUniversity"inFebruary1928.Assoonasthisordercameout,itimmediatelydrewoppositionfromteachersandstudents.Theybelievedthatsuchachangeofnamewas"notenoughtobecomeacentralinstitutioninthecountry,nortoestablishthescaleofthecapital'svoiceeducation."Theteachersandstudentsoftheschoolformeda“petitiongroupforchangingthenameoftheschool”andaskedthegovernmenttochangethenameoftheschoolto“NationalNanjingUniversity”inaccordancewiththepracticesoftheUniversityofLondonintheUnitedKingdomandtheUniversityofParisinFrance.However,theNationalGovernmentinsistedonchangingJiangsuUniversityandfinallynameditJiangsuUniversity.

OnMay16,1928,theNationalGovernmentExecutiveYuanmadearesolutionthat"JiangsuUniversity"wasrenamed"NationalCentralUniversity",andZhangNaiyanremainedthepresident.InAugust,NationalCentralUniversityadjusteditsfacultiesandestablishedeightfaculties,includingliberalarts,sciences,law,teaching,agriculture,engineering,commerce,andmedicine,makingitthemostcomprehensiveandlargestuniversityinChinaatthattime.

InSeptember1927,theChineseSocietyofNaturalScienceswasfoundedinschool.In1939,well-knownprofessorssuchasPanShu,LiangXi,JinShanbaoinitiatedthe"NaturalScienceSymposium"attheschool,andin1944itwastransformedintotheChineseAssociationofScientists.In1945,tocommemoratethevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWar,the"NaturalScienceSymposium"wasrenamedthe"JiuSanSymposium"andthentheJiuSanSociety.In1958,theChinaAssociationforScienceandTechnologywasestablishedinBeijingonthebasisofthemajorChinesescientificgroupsthatoriginatedfromtheschool.

InSeptember1932,thebusinessschoolandmedicalschoolinShanghaiwereindependent,andpartofthebusinessschoolmovedbacktoNanjing.In1935,themedicalschoolwasrebuiltinNanjing.

InJuly1937,theAnti-JapaneseWarbrokeoutandtheschoolmovedwesttoSichuan.TheschoolsitewaslocatedontheSonglinslopeofShapingba,ShaciDistrict,Chongqing.Itwascalled"ChongqingCentralUniversity"inhistory.

About1940,thestudentsofthisschoolsuccessivelystartedpublishing"TaiKungPao"and"UniversityNews".

AfterthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWarinAugust1945,WuYouxunbecametheprincipal.TheschoolopenedinBeijing(theabbreviationofNanjingatthetime)onNovember1,1946.Theschoolhassevencolleges,includingliberalarts,law,science,agriculture,engineering,medicine,andnormaleducation,37departments,6specialties,and26researchinstitutes.Itisthecountry'smostcomprehensiveuniversitywiththelargestscale.Accordingtostatisticsin1947,theschoolhad1,266facultymembersand4,066students.Itsgrandscale,completedisciplines,andstrongfacultyranksfirstamongalluniversitiesinthecountry,soitisknownas"thehighestinstitutionoftheRepublicofChina".

May1949Onthe7th,LiuBocheng,directoroftheNanjingMilitaryControlCommission,andSongRenqiong,deputydirector,sentpersonneltotakeovertheNationalCentralUniversity.OnAugust8,theNationalCentralUniversitywasrenamedNationalNanjingUniversity,andtheNationalNanjingUniversityCouncilwasestablishedonthe12th,withLiangXiasitschairman.

NanjingUniversity

October10,1950,receivedbytheMinistryofEducationoftheEastChinaMilitaryandPoliticalCommitteeThenoticeisthatthenameoftheschoolgoesto"National"andsimplycalled"NanjingUniversity".TheprincipalZhouHongjingresigned,andLiangXiservedasthechairmanoftheschoolcommittee.InJuly1951,NanjingUniversitychangedtheschooladministrationcommitteesystemtoapresidentialsystem,andPanShuwasappointedasthepresident.Atthisstage,theschoolestablishedthesocialistschoolorientationthroughaseriesofpositiveandstablereformsbasedontheworkpolicyof“maintaintheoriginalschoolandgraduallyimprove”,andclarifiedthepolicyofcombiningteachingandscientificresearchandtheleadershipofdemocraticcentralism.Thesystemlaidthefoundationforfuturedevelopment.

InJuly1952,facultiesanddepartmentswereadjusted.NanjingUniversityadjustedengineering,agronomy,teachertraining,etc.FacultiesestablishedNanjingInstituteofTechnology,NanjingAgriculturalCollege,NanjingNormalUniversityandotherrelatedcollegesandrelateddepartments;retainedtheFacultyofArtsandSciences,mainlymergedintotheFacultyofArtsandSciencesofJinlingUniversity,andtheschoolsitewasmovedfromSipailouNo.2AtthesiteoftheoriginalJinlingUniversityinGulou,itbecameacomprehensiveuniversityofliberalartsandsciences.

InDecember1956,PanShuledtheteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofPsychologytoBeijingtoformtheInstituteofPsychologyoftheChineseAcademyofSciences.ThefollowingyearGuoYingqiutookoverastheprincipal,andKuangYamingbecametheprincipalin1963.In1966,theCulturalRevolutionbrokeoutandteachingworkwasdisrupted.Undergraduateenrollmentwassuspendedfor6years,andpostgraduateenrollmentwassuspendedfor12years.Atthattime,NanjingUniversitywascalled"ahighereducationinstitutionoftheKuomintangreactionaries"and"theculturalcenteroftheKuomintang".Specialshock.

OnNovember26,1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecameanationwideThefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunits.

In1993,thePukoucampusofNanjingUniversitywasputintouse.

In1994,NanjingUniversitywasidentifiedasakeyuniversitysupportedbythenational"211Project".

In1999,NanjingUniversityenteredthefirstbatchofhigh-leveluniversitiesinthenational"985Project".

In2001,thefirstbatchofnationaldemonstrationsoftwarecollegeswereapprovedfortrialoperation.

InSeptember2002,NanjingUniversityandChinaMeteorologicalAdministrationsignedanagreementinJiangningtocarryoutall-roundcooperation.

In2006,theMinistryofEducationandJiangsuProvinceonceagainsignedanagreementtojointlybuildNanjingUniversity.

InSeptember2009,theCentralOrganizationDepartmentandtheMinistryofEducationissuedadocumentidentifyingNanjingUniversityasthefirstbatchofnationalcadreeducationandtrainingUniversitybase.InOctober,theXianlincampusofNanjingUniversitywasopenedandtheoriginalPukoucampuswastransferredtoJinlingCollege.Accordingtotheplan,theXianlincampuswillbecomethemaincampusofNanjingUniversity.Onthebasisofthedepartment,theDepartmentofElectronicScienceandEngineering,andtheDepartmentofMaterialsScienceandEngineering,theSchoolofPhysics,theSchoolofElectronicScienceandEngineering,andtheSchoolofModernEngineeringandAppliedSciencewerenewlyestablished.

InSeptember2017,NanjingUniversitywasselectedasthenational“DoubleFirstClass”"Aworld-classuniversitybuildinguniversity(ClassA).InDecember,theSchoolofArtofNanjingUniversitywasestablished.

校徽

南京大学校徽(10张)

南京大学校徽外形采用盾形的设计风格，该风格为中央大学时期所流传下来。校徽的左下方及右下方为英文“NANJINGUNIVERSITY”。南大校徽确定了特定色值的紫色为标准色，并将其命名为南大紫。

校徽正中为南京市——雪松，寓意南大坚忍不拔的精神。雪松的下方为书图案及“1902”字样，点明南京大学的建校时间为1902年。校徽的上方中间部位为由“南京”的艺术字体所组成的圆形图案，其两旁各有一只金陵辟邪神兽（貔貅），是南京的标志。（图册：南京大学视觉形象规范化标准）。

校色

南大标准色为紫色（南大紫），无正式校色。中央大学时校色为紫金二色，加之松青，故依据传统当为紫、金、青三色。紫色象征典雅、庄穆、高贵、浪漫，金色象征辉煌、光明、灵气、智慧，青色代表活力、自由、健康、纯朴、坚韧、清雅。紫金合于学校所在名山紫金山，青合于学校之象征树松。

吉祥物

南京大学校园文化吉祥物是“南大小蓝鲸”，2016年12月30日发布。由于“蓝鲸”谐音“南京”，南大学子也时常亲切地以“蓝鲸大学”来表达对学校的热爱。长期以来，“小蓝鲸”一直是南大校内众多学生组织、文创设计团队热爱的卡通形象。同学们自发设计了众多版本的“小蓝鲸”卡通形象，作为各类活动宣传品、文创产品卡通形象。学校已启动“小蓝鲸”等商标注册，“小蓝鲸”即将成为南京大学校园文化的象征和吉祥物。

精神文化

校训

“诚朴雄伟，励学敦行”八字校训，不仅言简意赅，琅琅上口，易于传记，而且端庄大气，寓意深刻，富有哲理。“诚朴雄伟”原是中央大学时期的校训，“励学敦行”是从中国古代前贤名句中选取而来。“励学”二字在古文中常有出现，宋真宗写过一首名为《励学篇》的诗，劝勉人勤奋学习；“敦行”见于《礼记·曲礼上》：“博闻强识而让，敦善行而不怠，谓之君子。”；将“诚朴雄伟”与“励学敦行”两句合为一起，既反映了南京大学的优良传统与特色，又能体现学校办学的理想追求和实现途径。八字校训既各自独立成意，各有侧重，又相互联系，浑然一体，涵盖了教育思想、科学精神、品格修养等各个方面。

校歌

南京大学历史上最早的校歌（原南京高等师范学校校歌，创作于1916年前后）为南京大学校歌。该校歌由现代中国音乐界一代宗师李叔同先生制谱，南高师首任校长江谦先生作词。

知名校友

中国政府在《新中国科技发展大事纪要》中遴选出解放后23项最重大的科技成果，其中有十项主要由南大校友完成。1955年至2014年中科院共评选出1255名院士，其中南京大学校友有226人（此处不包含53位中国工程院院士校友）。解放后就读于南大的校友中已有近百人当选为两院院士，其中13人是恢复高考后的本科毕业生，为恢复高考以来全国高校之首。中共中央表彰的23位两弹一星功勋中的任新民、黄纬禄、钱骥、朱光亚、程开甲、赵九章是南大校友。截至2014年24位国家最高科技奖得主中闵恩泽、吴良镛、刘东生、张存浩、程开甲是南大校友。获得国家自然科学奖一等奖的闵乃本、王德宝、秦仁昌、冯康、侯先光等是南大毕业生。
